計劃中文名稱: 在小型細胞行動通訊網路上實作具有省電功能的睡眠與喚醒機制

在密集布建小型細胞基地台(Small Cell)的行動通訊網路環境下,很多Small Cells的涵蓋範圍是會互相重疊的,當一個Small Cell的涵蓋範圍內沒有任何使用者設備(User Equipment, UE)需要服務時,此基地台應該要進入省電模式以避免功率的浪費,因此本計畫提出一個針對小型細胞基地台的省電與喚醒機制(Power-saving and Wake-up Mechanism, PWM ),在PWM中,我們定義的省電模式是將Small Cell的部分模組(例如射頻模組和通訊協定的相關軟體程式等)關閉,讓小型細胞基地台達到節省能源的目的。然而,當一個UE移入一個正處於省電模式的Small Cell的涵蓋範圍時,如果沒有其它的Small Cell可以提供服務,此UE便無法連線,因此,本計畫替小型細胞基地台另外設計一個喚醒機制,當涵蓋範圍內有一個UE開機或是移入時,此喚醒機制會主動喚醒處於省電模式的Small Cell。

了驗證所提出的PWM,我們將使用工研院(ITRI)所研發的Small Cell當作實驗平台,在此實驗平台上,我們將新增四個模組,RSRP監控模組負責記錄每個UE的參考訊號接收功率,資料庫管理(Database Manager)模組負責記錄每個UE與Small Cell的連線,Power-saving模組是藉由發送指令給Small Cell使其進入省電模式,最後,Wake-up模組是去偵測有UE突然移入其涵蓋範圍內時可以立即恢復正常運作的功能。在ITRI實驗平台實作完成後,我們會進行UE訊號強度與Small Cell功率消耗的量測,此量測結果將可驗證我們所提出的PWM確實可達到省電的目的,此外我們也會驗證當一個UE即將進入一個正處於省電模式Small Cell的涵蓋範圍時,此Small Cell將可立即被喚醒並恢復其正常的服務功能。

計劃英文名稱: Implementations of a Sleeping and Wake-up Mechanism for Power Saving in Small-Cell Mobile Communication Networks

In a mobile communication network, small cells could be deployed in a very high-density fashion. Since small cells have overlapping areas, it is quite often a small cell may serve no user equipment (UE). A power-on small cell serving no UE simply wastes its power. Therefore, we propose power-saving and Wake-up Mechanism (PWM) for a small cell to save energy. In the proposed PWM, we define a power-saving mode is a mode in which some HW/SW modules can be turned off, such as radio frequency modules and communication protocols related software modules. However, when one UE enters the coverage of a small cell in power saving mode, this UE may not get any connection service. Therefore, we have to design another module to wake up a small cell.

For the purpose of demonstration, we use ITRI’s small cell as an experimental platform to implement the proposed PWM. Four modules will be designed and developed on the platform. A RSRP (Reference Signal Received Power) monitor module is designed to record the RSRP for each UE. A database manager module is designed to record the connection status of each UE to its small cell. A power-saving module is designed to issue a command to a small cell so that the small cell can enter the power-saving mode. A Wake-up module is designed to actively wake up a small cell once a UE is about to enter its coverage. After the implementation, we will measure the signal strength of a UE and the power consumption of a small cell. With these two measurements, we verify that the proposed PWM can effectively save its power. Additionally, we will demonstrate that a small cell in power-saving mode can immediately recover its normal function when a UE is about to enter its coverage.
